Former Ogun State governor, Gbenga Daniel was yesterday arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) at his palatial private mansion in Sagamu over petitions written against him on alleged financial misconduct while in office. Next reports that Daniel was far away in Ikenne to attend the Yoruba Summit, when information reached him about the presence of security agents back home in Sagamu, who came to effect his arrest, hence, Daniel left the meeting venue in a hurry.
On arrival at his Aseludero quarters in Sagamu, the controversial former governor was whisked away, to the commission’s office for further interrogation.
Investigations further revealed that, as Daniel left the meeting venue, it was obvious to other attendees at the meeting that, he must have some challenges, in view of the manner he left.
Similarly, in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, the arrest of the former governor became a subject of discussion in number of places like motorparks, beer parlour and pepper soup joints, inside taxi cabs, among others.
When contacted, the media aide of the former governor, Gbenro Adebanjo confirmed the incident, but said his boss was invited, explaining that prior to his invitation, he had not been invited to answer any question.
"Today, agents of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC), visited the Sagamu home of Otunba Gbenga Daniel, former governor of Ogun State. When they got there, Otunba Daniel was at the pan Yoruba summit in Ikenne, " Adebanjo explained in a statement.
"On learning of their presence in Sagamu, Otunba Daniel left Ikenne to join them. After which he was taken away by the agents ostensibly to continue investigation into the petitions it had received against the former governor," the statement added.
Daniel spokesperson said it is important to state that prior to the commission’s visit, Daniel had not been invited to answer any question, adding that nothing incriminating has been found or brought to his notice by officials of the EFCC prior to their visit to his house on Thursday.
"Indeed when speculation became rife that he may be invited for questioning, a scheduled trip abroad by the former governor was put on hold in order for him to be available to answer the summons of the EFCC. As a law abiding citizen Otunba Daniel expects the agency to follow the due process in the current situation," he stated. The media aide boasted that Daniel remains confident that he would be vindicated as the petitions written against him, which may have formed the basis of his invitation by the EFCC are politically motivated. "We believe that at the end of the day the truth will prevail."
